‘Can’t let the dogs out’ Residents of Bhyraveshwara Layout are living in fear after miscreants poisoned around 50 dogs, including five pets, in their locality in past week Ashoka.MK @timesgroup.com
Shruthi S, an engineering student of Atria Institute of Technology, has been having sleepless nights since last week. She fears miscreants who had killed around 50 dogs, including five pets, in the area might kill her two dogs too. “Except for the pets in some houses, there are no other dogs in our area now,” she said.
Shruthi is not alone. Hundreds of residents of Bhyraveshwara layout under Hennur police limits are worried about the safety of their dogs. On Wednesday itself, seven dogs, including a pet, were found poisoned in the area.
“There are no stray dogs left in the area. There was a sense of security when they were there. They did not allow any stranger to move around in the area, especially during nights. The dogs have been targeted street after street. Now robbers can strike in the locality and easily hop on to the highway. Earlier, it was impossible for anyone to get away with it,” said Ashok Kumar, a businessman.
Ashok has filed a complaint with Hennur police. “Police asked me where this Bhyraveshwara Layout is located. I had to complain about their ignorance to the ACP. However, no action had been taken against the killing of dogs,” he added.
Pushpa Chandrashekar, a housewife whose pet dog Johnny died on Wednesday, said, “It was alright this morning. My husband even took it for walk. I later noticed the dog writhing in pain near our gate. We tried to revive it by giving it salt water, but failed. My youngest daughter is very much attached to the dog. I don’t know what I am going to tell her.”
Another resident of the locality said while the security guards, who were paid good salaries, go to sleep during the wee hours, it was these dogs which guarded the area. “These dogs ensured our security all these days. We used to have sound sleep during the night. These days, we are waking up at least three times in the night.”
Hennur police inspector Hanumantharaya said he was not aware of the issue. When he was told that a complaint had been registered in his police station, he said he was busy monitoring the Ganesha procession and would look into the matter.
