This is with regard to my recent visits to GHMC Autonagar dog pound on 29th July 2011, 30th July 2011 and 9th Aug 2011.

I went to GHMC Autonagar dog pound on 29th July to verify whether they have caught my friend’s missing pet dog. To my shock, I have never seen so much brutality towards these poor animals. I also inquired local people nearby.

1. First of all, the location is just beside the Autonagar garbage dump yard. It is so unhealthy place for ABC operations to be carried out.You can see thousands of mosquitoes and flies at this place. It is cutoff from life all together. Most of the people just defecate openly nearby the dog pound.

2. Most of the cages have 6 to 8 dogs but some have 12 to 15 dogs cramped in them. Most the cages have water troughs missing. Even if the water troughs are available, some have no water and all of those which have water are unclean. You can see filthy water with flies and germs in them.

Now comes the food part. White rice with diluted milk or curd ( I am not sure milk or curd – it is complete watery) is found in the cages in asmall bowl which is enough to feed a single dog that too single time. It is not at all sufficient for the all the dogs. I have found out there that they feed only one time a day.

3. You can see most of the dogs are laying down calm, the real reason is not because they are caged or in fear but because they are very weak due to lack of food and water. The strong one in the cage eats all the food and the weak one suffers. The only chance for eating food is for the strong one. That means the remaining 6 or 7 dogs have no chance to eat food and water.

4. Whelping mothers are kept in same cage with other dogs. Since food is not at all sufficient, mother dog has to starve and most of the times loose her puppies as food for remaining dogs.

5. The place is so unclean and unhygienic which is store for diseases like parvo, carona, distemper. Most dogs which are weak and also the puppies are prone to these diseases. I have seen most of the dogs having blood in their urine and stools. Sometimes they just urinate blood or defecate mucousy blood stools. What chance of survival do puppies have against this? Each and every dog which comes here becomes infected. The dogs are dying horribly and forget about puppies – no chance at all.

6. Showcase dogs – Some operated dogs are kept as showcase. Most of the operated dogs never get released because these people want to show the visitors that dogs are not killed but operated. You can see the same operated dog even after a month (if he is not starved to death or died of any disease). The new incoming dogs are always end up dead or used as replacement for the dead operated dogs. Very few dogs are getting released maybe 5% to 10 % if lucky.I have also seen two dogs with their surgery cuts open, with blood pouring and intestine out of body. And also these released ones are diseased and have undergone so many traumas which make them unfit for survival once they are released.

7. Stray pigs if caught have no chance at all. They are sold to pork shops immediately.

8. If any breed dogs are found, they are kept in separate cages. Yes they are treated separately and they have complete bowl of stinking food for themselves. The reason for this, not because they are breed dogs but because they will be sold, mostly to breeders.

9. Skin disease and injured dogs are definitely euthanized. Even if skin is infected in a size of a small patch, they are killed mercilessly. Why in the world they just don’t try to treat them? I found some dogs beaten, a few lost their eyes, broken tails caught between cages,…

10. These people are just building up numbers, that they are operating so many dogs and vaccinating them. Utter nonsense, I have seen a few non-operated dogs staying for more than 2 or 3 weeks and still find them here – weak, starving, diseased, waiting to die. No real numbers of how many they are catching, operating and releasing. They are just operating 4 or 5 dogs per day or may be none at all.

11.And also on observing, you can find that everyday dog catchers bring in 20 to 30 dogs. They are just filling up cages, so what about the previous dogs which used to be in cages.

12. The staff at the dog pound is nothing but murderers. These people treat dogs so cruelly injuring them, starving them and also stealing the food meant for dogs. They are taking away rice and milk to their home. These corrupt murderers are living on death of these poor innocent creatures. Infact, I bought some biscuits to feed them, but some where stolen and I caught one of the staff red-handed.

13. When I confronted them regarding this, they are saying all cock and bull stories. That they are operating about 15 dogs per day and releasing them immediately after 2 or 3 days, they are keeping the premises clean and they donot euthanize dogs unless they are rabid or mortally wounded – the story goes on. Bundle of lies keep pouring from their mouth. I found it is no use talking to these people and or any of GHMC officials. Despite repeated complaints they are still same.

14. Dead bodies are dumped somewhere in garbage dump or there are sold to nearby skin factory (making money on dead bodies also)

100 to 200 dogs are dying per week because of this merciless treatment. So many innocent creatures are losing their life in a most suffering way. With no one to monitor, GHMC is just dictating terms.

I have talked to few animal activists and to my surprise they know everything. Not just them, almost everybody. They just can’t help, because most of the activists are not united and also cannot go against the government department. This is an open secret.

Even a common man when asked about what GHMC does do to dogs – he replies ‘they kill them’.

In my visit having a gap of 10 days between 30th July and 9th Aug, I noticed about 30 to 40 dogs missing (since I fed them I was able to recall a few of them – donno how many un-noticed ones are also missing) and most of them have become like skeletons and infected with diseases.

I was not allowed to take pics, and also had my mobile grabbed. It was not returned to me until I deleted them but was able to save a few pics. I am attaching them here.

Just spend a day at GHMC dog pound; it is a house of horrors – no less than a Slaughter House.

I don’t know how much use it is posting this message here. But I want the people to know that by turning a blind eye we are loosing beautiful animals.

Hello All,

With reference to Akshara’s message, I have had a similar experience just like her almost 10 days back.
I have seen the same dead dogs which were seen by her but a day later (still lying there ; the dog which was eaten by other dogs). These people have left the corpses to be eaten by other dogs or what? How much trauma would have these dogs undergone to see their fellow dogs die before their eyes.
GHMC is saying that they are conducting ABC programs and releasing dogs in same area. Then why can’t we find these dogs in our locality?
I would like to ask if anyone has found a dog with clipped ears in their area. I never seen any in my locality.
I regularly feed dogs in my locality, have them vaccinated and tied GHMC license tags around their necks. But still they come and pick these healthy vaccinated dogs when no one is around. The dogs which GHMC have taken away from my locality never turned up. After inquiring and coming to know that they have been picked up, I even visited the dog pound but never found them there. What is happening to these dogs? Dogs kept missing and none came back. This just doesn’t concern with my place. Its happening all over.
Also I would like to point out one more thing. None of the Cages have identifications like which dogs where picked up from which area? They are put in cages randomly. So how come GHMC says that we releasing dogs in same area?
As said GHMC dog pound is no lesser than a slaughter house. The experience is more than a horror which cannot be described in words. All you find is PAIN, SUFFERING, BARBARIC TORTURE.
Thanks,
Kalyana Krishna
