It is a law in India that no dog can be killed. The dogs should be neutered under ABC(Animal Birth Control) Program, vaccinated and released at the same place where they are caught. Dog Pounds are illegal in India. Dogs which are caught for neutering should be sent to animal shelters or NGOs. But dog pounds are maintained by GHMC(Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Hyderabad) which are slaughter houses for Dogs.
Dogs are crammed into thick wired cages with no food, water or sufficient space to move. Puppies and Dogs which die to starvation or disease are eaten by other severely starved dogs. These Dog pounds breed severe contagious diseases like parvo, carona, distemper etc. Most of the dogs get infected and common scenes like defecation of bloody stools and bloody urine is visible.
The doctors are not properly trained to neuter the dogs. Improper sterilizations are carried out with unsterile medical equipments. Sometimes the operations are done by helping staff. Dogs with intestines out of surgery cuts or blood oozing out is a commonplace. Puppies such as 2 or 3 months are neutered while most of the adult healthy dogs are not operated at all.
The number of sterilizations per day is very low, maybe 5 or 6. A large number of healthy dogs are euthanized clandestinely. Lots of dogs are seen missing between successful visits to these pounds just within a week. All of skin disease dogs, most of puppies and dogs which are not fit for neutering are euthanized. Most of the dogs become aggressive because they have to fight for food and these are killed for being aggressive or falsely stated as rabid so that they can be killed.
None of the dogs, even injured or diseased, receive any kind of medical help. Many dogs are kept as showcase dogs.They are never released even if some of them are operated. They stay there till they die of starvation or because of any disease. Very few lucky ones are released, maybe 10 % of those caught. These are survivors of the barbaric torture which are severely diseased and traumatized. But next time if these neutered dogs are caught, they are euthanized.
There is a huge pilferage in the medicines and food meant for dogs, which is either taken home or sold. Pedigreed dogs which are caught are sold to breeders. Other animals like pigs and monkeys are also brought to Dog Pound. Pigs are sold to pork shop while monkeys which should be sent to forest for rehabilitation are kept crammed in dog cages for days. Most of these monkeys are starved, diseased or dead before the time of release comes.
