Vellore: Nearly 40 stray dogswere reportedly administered a lethal injection in a township managed by BHEL, a public sector company, near Ranipetrecently.
The SIPCOT police lodged a case following a complaint from a veterinary doctor of the department of the animal husbandry alleging mass killing of stray dogs in the township. A case has been registered under the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and police launched an investigation.
Collector S A Raman said they had received a complaint from an animal activist, T B Somanathan, that around 40 stray dogs were poisoned to death near Ranipet. “I have instructed the officials of the department to verify the facts and take appropriate action,” the collector said.
Somanathan claimed that official of a public sector company near Ranipet engaged their sanitary workers for the mass killing of stray dogs on the premises of the township. They administered lethal injection on around 40 dogs and buried the carcasses of the animals in the riverbed near Trivalam Bridge. “The incident came to light after I received a call from Menaka Gandhi on Thursday. She told me that she received an e-mail from a resident of the township that stray dogs had been killed by administering lethal injection,” Somanathan said.
Somanathan said police had identified the spot where the animals were buried and also secured the driver of the vehicle used to transport the carcasses of dogs to the riverbed. The officials would also exhume the body for post-mortem on Monday.
Sub-inspector of police, attached to the SIPCOT station, S Muthu Eswaran, who is the investigation officer in the case, said they trying to ascertain the exact spot where the carcasses of the dogs were reportedly buried. “The complainant is also not sure about the date of the incident and where the dead animals were buried,” he said.
